Ask a Queensland maths student what they fear and they will say the external exam. Ask a maths teacher where students throw away easy marks and they will say the PSMT.
The Problem-Solving and Modelling Task is IA1 in Mathematical Methods, Specialist Mathematics, and General Mathematics: a written report worth 20% of your final subject result, usually completed early in the summative year. It is the one piece of maths assessment where being quick at algebra barely helps, because it grades a different skill: taking a messy real-world scenario, turning it into mathematics, and defending every choice you made along the way.
The four stages
QCAA's approach to problem-solving and mathematical modelling runs through four stages, and your report is effectively marked against them:

Notice what is missing: there are no marks for volume of algebra. A short, coherent model that is formulated clearly and evaluated honestly beats ten pages of unexplained working every time.
Where students actually lose marks
After years of drafts, the same weaknesses show up on repeat:
- Assumptions never stated. Every model assumes things (constant rates, independence, a simplified shape). Markers reward assumptions that are stated up front and justified, then revisited in the evaluation. Silent assumptions read as accidents.
- No real evaluation. The evaluate-and-verify stage is where weaker reports collapse into one sentence ("the model worked well"). Strong reports verify results by an independent method, test how sensitive the answer is to the assumptions, and make justified statements about strengths and limitations.
- Technology without justification. Graphing software and spreadsheets are expected tools, but "I put it in the calculator" is not reasoning. Say what the technology did and why the output can be trusted.
- Communication as an afterthought. The report has strict page and word limits (your task sheet states them). Students who dump working into the body and blow the limit lose the plot, literally: the marker cannot find the argument.
A realistic timeline
Schools typically give a few weeks from task sheet to final submission, with one checkpoint draft. Working backwards:
- Week 1: formulate properly. Spend real time here. A rushed formulation poisons everything downstream, because solving the wrong model well earns very little.
- Week 2: solve and verify as you go. Keep a running record of decisions and assumptions; you will not remember them later.
- Week 3: write the evaluation, then rewrite the report around it. The evaluation is the intellectual centre of the task. Draft it, then make sure the earlier sections set it up.
- Before submission: cut. Get inside the limits by deleting anything that does not serve the argument, not by shrinking figures until they are unreadable.
How to practise for a task you cannot cram
You cannot memorise a PSMT, but you can train its skills: modelling small scenarios end-to-end, writing assumption lists for past tasks, and practising the verification habit (solve one way, check another).
